I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, still have a dream. It is a dream dee* rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its belief: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

That one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state suffering from the heat of unfairness, suffering from the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice; I have a dream

That my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character; I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day down in Alabama, with its evii racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and invalidity, one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers; I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be gone, every hill and mountain shall be made Iow, and rough places will be made plane and crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

I HAVE A DREAM3

This is not the famous dream of the AfricanAmerican civil rights activist Martin Luther King. My dream is not that big. It’s only about Yerpa, a tiny riverside village. But when I refl ect on these dreams alone, I could not help feeling excited, anxious, or even awe-stricken.

What excites me is the dazzling prospects; what makes me anxious is that these dreams should’ve come true a long time ago; I am awe stricken because I am not sure they will become reality in my lifetime.

I have a dream that one day all the houses in Yerpa village will be linked by concrete paths lined with solar street lamps and fruit trees. Benches are set up here and there for people to take a break...

I have a dream that retaining walls will be built in Gogo Lungpa Valley through which a clear brook meanders. In the upstream, a small dam will be built, so snowmelt water from the mountain can gather here, and fl ow into the purifying water tower. Clean and safe water will be made available to every villager. All they have to do is to turn on the tap...

I have a dream that all the farmland in the village will be linked by water channels and pipes. So every drop of the precious water will be used, for the apples, pears, grapes, barley, wheat, and corn on every inch of the arid land...

I have a dream that the terraced fi elds in the village will be protected by fence netting, so the villagers will no longer have to chop down thorns and bushes all over the hills, and take great trouble to crawl between ridges...

I have a dream that a small square will be built beside the white pagoda in front of the village. There’s no need for decorative fountains, spotlights, or a large screen, as long as the ground is smooth and fl at, so the villagers can gather here during festivals, have a bonfi re, and dance in circle. Flag-hoisting ceremonies can be performed here on national holidays by the village committee...

I have a dream that the mountain paths around the village will be fi tted with guardrails, so there will be no more heart-breaking accidents when little kids fall off the cliff and bring endless pain to their families...

I have a dream that there will be a cable radio in every house in the village, so people can listen to their favorite music, and learn about the new preferential policies for farmers. The village chief will no longer have to shout at the top of his lung on a hill just to make an announcement...

I have a dream that plastic or even glass greenhouses will be set up in the courtyard of every house, with biogas digester installed beneath them. The domestic animals will all move out from under the house. When preparing meals, with the simple touch of a button, the housewives will see the blue fl ames rise from their new stoves. They will no longer have to trudge along the rough mountain road with heavy fi rewood on their back...

I have a dream that every family will move into a new house. It might not be big, but clean and bright, with no fl ies to be found. The garbage disposal unit by the village will turn all the organic waste into fertilizers. All the farm products of the village will be 100 percent green...

I have a dream that scientists will invent a simple electric generator, and set up two big frames on both banks of the Nujiang River, so the generator can move up and down with the water level, and provide the village with ample power to pump water from the river. So the villagers of Yerpa who have always lived by the river, will stop worrying about water supply while watching the roaring Nujiang River at long last...

My biggest dream is that the clear mountain spring will be channeled to Yerpa from Nyipa, which is only 10 kilometers away. By the primary school at the entrance to the village, a public bath will be built. Abundant solar power and water resources make sure that people can take showers whenever they want. The fi ve ponds in the village will all be transformed into standardized water tanks. The domestic animals will have their own tanks to drink from. The water runs through a network of canals and fl ows into every orchard and every piece of farmland...

I have a dream that one day the carpenters in the village will join force to form a small cooperative business, and take orders from the cities. The village will set up a fruit production and processing cooperative, a grape winery and a buckwheat distillery, a picturesque rock collection fi rm, a weight-loss center using dried pear products, and a pepper and chili production and sales company... Those wimpy school kids with running noses will grow up to be strong and smart men. But if they drive to Lhasa and ask for my help to promote their products, I am not sure if I will accept their invitation to go back to the village, because I will not be able to hold back my tears when I think of the cheerful dirty-faced villagers whose joints were deformed by the hard work, and my old friends who endured a lifetime of hardship but did not live long enough to see the bright future...
