远大前程英文读后感【第一篇】

During the last month, I have been reading the novel named Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I set up my mind to finish reading it for the simple reason that I have read the Chinese version of this great novel and I was deeply attracted by the story.

The main character in this novel is Pip and the whole story goes like this: Pip was a orphan and was brought up by his sister “by hand”。 His sister Mrs. Joe was very strict with him while his brother-in-law treat him kindly. As a result, the two developed a intimate relationship. Since Pip was asked to visit Miss Havishams’s house, his mind and his fate began to change. In Miss Havishams’s home, Pip saw her adopted daughter Estella and fell in love with her at the first sight. Then he was determined to be well-educated and become a gentleman in order to deserve the beautiful girl Estella. And much to his delight, he was given a large sum of money and an opportunity to study abroad by an anonymous person. After a period of time, his great expectations came true and he became a gentleman at last. However, he found out that the money was offered by the criminal he had saved when he was young. He felt ashamed and didn’t want to use the money any more. What’s worse, the criminal Magwitch escaped from prison to visit Pip and was noticed by the police. At last, Magwitch was sentenced to death and Pip led a normal life. The beautiful lady became a widow as her husband died. But Pip still loved her and promised to be friends with her all the same. This ending is a bit reaasuring.

Among those several characters in the novel, my favourite is Magwitch. He was homeless and poor when he was young and he used to be put into prison several times. No one cared about him, so when little Pip saved him by giving him some food, he felt moved. And he bore Pip’s help in his mind. When he was exiled overseas, he was determined to make a lot of money and help Pip become a gentleman. He worked hard and saved every coin he could, and then sent it to Pip. He did all of these secretly in order to prevent little Pip from being embarrassed. After Pip became a real gentleman, Magwitch returned to England in secret only to see whether Pip had led a good life. What we can find from him is deep love for Pip. Although the society has deserted him, he is not deserted by himself. Different from Miss Havishams who is black-hearted, Magwitch is like a father. He showed his love to Pip without any hesitation. He was just like Pip’s father. This is why I admire him very much.

Then when I look back into our society, I find that some parents are not as good as the criminal Magwitch. Cases are that parents push their children to work hard in order to be admitted into the college where they were eager to go when they were young. This usually leads to two consequences. One is that the children are exerted too much pressure and they go to extremes. The other is that their children do as they are told to and don’t have their independent thinking. They lack the comprehensive abilities to cope with fierce competition in today’s society. In other words, they are likely to survive in this competitive world.

God is equal to everyone. When Magwitch knew that Estella was his daughter and had been loved by Pip, he felt relieved. I am also relieved because one good turn deserves another.

远大前程英文读后感【第二篇】

"Great Expectations" has been considered to be one of Charles Dickens’ most mature and relatively late works. Having experienced a wealth of human life, Dickens got a profound understanding of human-being, the surrounding environment and his life experiences while all his mature thinking and understanding were summarized into the book "Great Expectations"。 The original meaning of the work’s title in fact is a heritage, but when it was translated into Chinese it gave me an impression that the title shows the hero of the story had Great Expectations. However, reading over the book I realized that this "Great Expectations" takes an ironic band——it should be said that the theme of this work not only told the story of orphan Pip who wanted to be the ideal first-class disillusionment. If one does think so, he holds a wrong understanding of the great significance why Dickens creative the work. The hero Pip lived with his sister’s family. Though their life was hard, Pip didn’t wish to be a first-class person his vision was to be a blacksmith like his brother-in-law, his sister’s husband. The reason why he changed his mind and was eager to be a first-class person later was the changing of environment——he met Miss Harvisham, Estella and some other complex people. As we know one of Dickenss philosophy thoughts is environment takes a deep impact to humans’ ideological and the story expresses his view that different environment creates different people. In short, I think the work was not arbitrarily written, but was based on the 10 works before aggregating Dickens’ thoughts. What is more, Dickens had put his outlook on life, his views of philosophy and ethics into the great creation.

The story is pided into three phases of Pips life expectations. The first "expectation" is allotted 19 chapters, and the other two 20 chapters each in the 59-chapter work. In some editions, the chapter numbering reverts to Chapter One in each expectation, but the original publication and most modern editions number the chapters consecutively from one to 59. At the end of chapters 19 and 39, readers are formally notified that they have reached the conclusion of a phase of Pips expectations.

In the first expectation, Pip lives a humble existence with his ill-tempered older sister and her strong but gentle husband, Joe Gargery. Pip is satisfied with this life and his warm friends until he is hired by Miss Havisham and that time on, Pip aspires to leave behind his simple life and be a gentleman. This life is suddenly turned upside down when he is visited by a London attorney, Mr. Jaggers.

The second stage of Pips expectations has Pip in London, learning the details of being a gentlemen, having tutors, fine clothing, and joining cultured society. At the end of this stage, Pip is introduced to his benefactor, again changing his world.

远大前程英文读后感【第三篇】

Dickens is not a writer disdaining women. Instead he loves, respects and takes care of them, however, in his novels, he unconsciously degrades women and puts them inferior to men. This time I want to adopt Great Expectations to evidence my thesis.

Two reasons account for this. The Victorian Age pushed women back to home and indulge in their obedience and docility. An able woman today may be sung highly as a model of independence but male dominated that period even a little bit of rebellion from female world is regarded as the despising of sacred belief. The other one lies in that Dickens, as a well-known and truly successful writer, composes various and popular works. As a male, his achievement sounds great, which belittles the rest of his contemporaries, let alone the women. His success made him believe in men’s great ability.

There are three aspects in this novel that I believe this kind of thought of Dickens is revealed.

The first one is that women are fragile. “ Weaker, your name is woman.” Two hundreds ago, Shakespeare authored to the world this unprecedented sentence in Hamlet. Later, Dickens followed this great instruction unconsciously in creating his own works. That is not because that women are in lack of will but that they need surviving abilities and that of self-survival and struggle against destiny. They always turn to men. That can be called “hero saving the beauty”。 This notion originated in the Greek tales but is still adopted successively. The only difference between them lies in the plot and structure. Estella is adopted and trained to break men’s hearts by Miss Havisham. Havisham revenges men and marries Estella to an unworthy guy though Pip deeply loves Estella. Nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy for a man. Pip really fell into the despair of losing Estella. However, Estella suffers a lot and begins to regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasure

Then comes my second point. Facing destiny women are physically and intellectually inferior to men. Actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence but that it seems so. Or we can say that both men and women have the same potential of intelligence, but women never show a lot. God create everyone equally but not everyone is granted the same approaches to success or achievements. They are restricted to families, which restrict them from showing a lot. They can cook food well, which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male’s world. The novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness. The ordinary intelligence of women in marriage and love is exposed completely. Havisham is abandoned on her wedding day, but she keeps the room like the day she got married, while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men. Bearing these two conflictive thoughts in mind, Havisham certainly fails to live her own life out of the control or influence from male though she se

The discipline for women is my third point. A feminist De Bufuwa says, ‘One is called woman because she i《》s “made” not “born”’。 Culturally woman is the product of society and the result of its strict restrictions. Those women who do not obey the disciplines are not regarded as gracious or good women by social criteria, which emphasizes on families, the responsibilities for their husbands and their dependence on men. In Great Expectations, Estella and Havisham’s misfortunes are closely attached to love and marriage. They try to revenge men and but they cannot leave men. Estella leaves Pip but at last comes back to him, and Havisham keeps thinking about her marriage day and her the other part, who should come that day, in that gloomy room though she on the other hand revenges men. So tracing the track of a decent woman is the priority for women, as revealed in Dickens’ novel, otherwise tribulation falls.

Every period has an outstanding feature, which make descendants linger in mind. Victorian Age passed long ago, but its typical rules for women still work to some extent. To learn this novel can help us in understanding better women’s efforts to stand up. Society presses public to believe in notion that male play a dominant role. Even a feminist will drop into that swirl as she sees more and thinks more. Havisham can symbolize a feminist but what then? She needs a male accompany. Her ending somewhat is tragic but Estella harvests through a long time, but anyway she wins in depending man and leading a pleasant life.

The above is what I get from the novel in the textbook and to conclude my opinion in one sentence, I should say that women depend on men. That is not my opinion, but what I get. I have to mention that again since I myself am one part of that group and I am not willing to take a subordinate role in both family and society.

远大前程英文读后感【第四篇】

“Great expectations” is one of Dicken’s most maturest works. After Dicken had experienced large part of meaningful life, he had a deeper cognition for people, environment, as well as the life which he had gone through. And all the mature cognitions are included in this writing---Great expectations.

Pip was brought up by his sister who was unpleasant as well as crude and her friendly blacksmith husband-Joe. Joe himself had arranged a common hard but satisfied path for Pip to go through, and on the other hand, Pip beheld this as his highest goal to achieve.

But the two things which he had experienced later had changed his pursue and his fate as well. Met Abel Magwith(an escaped convict) in the swamp, and unwillingly helped him out of danger by stealing food from his own home. If say that had changed his attitude for material life, then, his introduction to Miss Havisham, an aging woman who had been jilted at the alter and Estella who had been brought up by Havisham only to revenge for her own pain had brought vast shock for his world of spirit.

Aspiring to be a gentleman despite his humble born, Pip fortunately or unfortunately received a fund of wealth from an unknown source and being sent to London with a lawyer. From then on, he became a gentleman without question at the price of losing everything.

The title of this book is ‘Great expectations” which make an impression on us that the character would have great expectations just as the title goes. But in fact this title has a tone of sarcastic on the other way around.

This story full of quirkiness from the very beginning to the end, the relations among characters are anfractuous as well which actually attracted me a lot.

One of the paragraphs, which I appreciate most implicatively as well as beautifully expresses the feeling between Pip and Estella.

“We are friends,” said I, rising and bending over her, as she rose from the bench.

‘And will continue friends apart.” Said Estella.

I took his hand in mine, and we went out of the ruined place; and, as the morning mists had risen long ago when I first let the forge, so, the evening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw no shadow of another parting from her.

At the view of language, this works had achieved a step o f highest, Dicken had made this writing plain and fluent as well, which surely can attract lots of readers and high comments.

To be frank, I really impressed by this art of beauty. So I like Dicken’s works very much.
