英文求职信是商务语篇的分支之一,也是商务英语写作教学体系中的必学内容。一封好的英文求职信,能打动未来雇主,让学生获得面试的机会甚至把自己“推销”出去。教师除了传授给学生基本的写作规范,还要让学生掌握写作技巧,加强学生的思维训练。因此,教学策略的运用问题显得尤为重要。
一、英文求职信写作教学现状
英语写作一直被视为英语教学中最薄弱的环节。作为一类写怍体裁,英文求职信的写作教学是教师面临的一大挑战。目前,国内高校英语写作教材中的英文求职信教学内容大多是基础性的,如写作规范、基本句型以及相应的写作模板,很少有创新性内容。教师授课时照本宣科,学生写作时主要是拷贝复制。最近出现了一些关于互联网和社会网络(Social netw-orking)是否会取代求职信这一传统写作体裁的讨论,因此有必要创新英文求职信写作教学策略。
二、AlDA模式与七个语步法的比较
(一)AIDA模式的含义
国际营销大师Heinz MGoldmann(1993)在《如何赢得顾客》中提出了AIDA模式。AIDA由四个英文单词的首字母组成:A为Attention(引起注意),I为Interest(激发兴趣),D为Desire(刺激欲望),最后一个字母A为Action(促成行动)。在具体运用中是指一个成功的营销员必须把潜在顾客的注意力吸引或者转移到产品上,使潜在顾客对推销产品产生兴趣,然后采取一定策略使潜在顾客产出购买的欲望,再促使潜在顾客采取购买行为,达成交易。AIDA模式适用于多种形式的写作内容,包括商务推销书等。
(二)七个语步法的内容
Bhatia通过系统的研究发现,英语求职信应分为七个语步(seven moves):确认任职凭证(Establishment credential),介绍候选人身份(Introducing candi-dature),提出激励条件(0fferingincentives),附寄相关文件(Enclosing documents),索取回复(Soliciting for response),采用施压策略(using pressure tactics)和礼貌收尾(Ending politely)等,以上内容构建了求职信这一特殊语篇的认知结构。
(三)AIDA模式与七个语步的比较
由图1可见,AIDA模式与七个语步两者虽有不同,却也有颇多相通之处。不同之处在于:AIDA模式代表传统推销过程中的四个发展阶段,它们是相互关联、缺一不可的;七个语步并没有严格的前后顺序,它强调各语步之间的灵活运用(见图1 Flexibility),且很少采用第6个语步,即施压策略(Using pressure tactics)。相同之处在于:尽管七个语步用于英文求职信写作的自我推销,AIDA模式指导商品的推销,但是英文求职信和商务销售书同属一种语篇体裁,因为它们都有交际目的与功能,并且他们的写作流程基本一致。与七个语步相比,AIDA模式涉及内容更丰富、运用领域更广泛,学生一旦掌握这种自我推销的方法,不仅可以拓宽写作思路,还可以加强书面沟通能力。因此,本文将尝试以AIDA模式为指导,创新英文求职信教学步骤,即Attention-引起注意:给雇主留下好印象,赢得注意Interest-激发兴趣:识别或重申雇主的需求Desire-刺激欲望:把自身特点与公司利益联系起来Action-促成行动:提供联系方式,结束自我推销,丰富英文求职信教学策略。
三、基于AIDA模式的英文求职信具体写作教学策略
(一)热身策略
教师上课伊始就向学生介绍本次课教学任务――完成一封英文求职信,要求该求职信体现出学生的各项能力,赢得下一步与用人单位面试的机会。这显然会引起学生的“抵触”情绪,因为要完成一封有“卖点”的英文求职信并非易事,它需要学生具备较好的写作技巧和一定的经验积累。为了吸引学生的注意力,教师应先通过一些活动来预热本次教学任务。教师可以随机拿出一件学生都容易获得的物品如iPhone,让学生以小组为单位开展推销活动并最终推选出该组最成功的“推销员”。随后,教师邀请他们做演示,并不失时机地提出问题:Why arethey successful?为了配合教学的顺利进行,笔者建议教师提前一周布置撰写英文求职信的课后作业。这样,学生在初稿形成过程中能发现问题,并带着问题来上课;另一方面,此举将节约课堂教学时间,为教师开展各环节的教学提供时间保证。
(二)导入策略
当讨论引起学生浓厚的学习兴趣时,教师提出第二个问题:How to sell yourself successfullyin a cover letter?教师开始介绍AIDA模式理论及其指导下的英文求职信写作教学步骤:第一步,引起注意(Attention),即给雇主留下好印象,赢得注意;第二步,激发兴趣(Interest):识别或重申雇主的需求;第三步,刺激欲望(Desire):把自身特点与公司利益联系起来;第四步,促成行动(Action):提供联系方式,结束自我推销。需要注意的是,在介绍AIDA模式的四个写作步骤时应分别强调以下重点:引起注意往往归功于漂亮的开场白;激发兴趣要找出雇主的“需要”,然后强化雇主的需要,引起雇主对你的兴趣;刺激欲望中的重要一点是要雇主相信,与竞争者相比,你有鲜明的特色,可以为雇主带来哪些“好处”;促成行动不仅要让雇主确认他的购买动机是正确的,他的购买决定是明智的,还要留下有效的联系方式,并告知你随时可以来面试或上班。
为了更好地帮助学生创作,教师应本着循序渐进原则,从小处着手,首先安排学生完成一些小任务。如,列一张清单:从你的简历中整理出你的特点,列成一张清单,如组织协调能力、与人交往能力等;举一些佐证:如事实或数据等。
(三)四个步骤策略
1.引起注意(Attention):给雇主留下好印象,赢得注意
作为英文求职信的开头,第一段将决定求职材料能否引起雇主的注意。AIDA模式有12种不同的开场白策略,学生在实际写作时应根据作者和用人单位的实际情况作出判断,并灵活运用。以强调自身的优势、真诚的赞美和提及有影响力的第三人为例。
第一,强调自身的优势。在英文求职信中,学生应本着扬长避短的原则,根据自身的条件,分两种情况强调自己的优势。第一种情况是申请人具备了很多有利条件,但它的主要挑战是如何组织语言,而不能生搬硬套,更不能让雇主感觉申请人在自我吹嘘。第二种情况是申请人的某些方面较弱,比如学习成绩不理想,这时就要避免谈及这项主题,或者把话题转向有利于自己的方面。无论申请人从哪种情况来强调自身的优势,其所列举的事实一定要符合雇主的需求,并且列举的优势应在文中被充分论证。
第二,真诚的赞美。美国哈佛大学的教授要求学生在校期间必须做20件事,其中一件就是要学会赞美他人。赞美用人单位适用于学生没有特别的优点时,也适用于求职者认为自身对公司的某些观点会引起雇主的注意,见例1。当然,这种赞美要显示出你的真诚,而真诚来源于你对公司深入的了解甚至调研,夸大其词或者泛泛而谈只会适得其反。

第三,提及有影响力的第三人。当雇主在英文求职信的开头浏览到一位有影响力的第三人,譬如该行业的名人、雇主的朋友、公司的员工以及其他有可能引起雇主注意的人员时,将有效激发雇主的阅读兴趣,提高求职者的“被关注度”。例如,求职者事先得知雇主是其校友,或者求职者得到了雇主原在校导师的推荐等,那么便可以着重强调这一点,如ProfessorLee Pan,who is working inXYZ CoHege,has suggested thatI write to you concerning aposition as a merchandiser inyour company
2.激发兴趣(Interest):识别或重申雇主的需求
多数毕业生在英文求职信中不断重复他们的职业目标和求职岗位,总是从“自我”的角度来阐述观点和看法,这是不正确的。一封推销书的成败关键在于推销人员是否强调了顾客的需求,而英文求职信则看求职者是否强调了用人单位的需求。因此,以某种“引起注意”策略完成第一段写作之后,在第二段的写作中要着重阐述雇主的需求。
针对雇主的需求,一般采用两种应对策略:通用型需求策略和个性化需求策略。通用型需求策略可用于相同的目标企业或目标岗位,如例2。个性化需求策略针对特定的用人单位或者招聘职位。学生在采取这个策略时,应该引用招聘广告上的岗位描述,特别要重申用人单位招聘新员工的主要条件。由于篇幅和字数限制,关键词的使用在这段求职信的写作中很重要,学生在写作中应精心设计,使自身优点与岗位要求达成一致,一般来说选择三个左右的关键词为宜,如例3。此外,作为第二段和第三段的过渡句,教师应提醒学生在第二段的结尾句引入FEB法。

3.刺激欲望(Desire):把自身特点与公司利益联系起来
英文求职信的第三部分写作采用FEB法则。FEB是Features,Evidence and Benefits首字母的缩写,在营销学中是指被推销商品的特质、证明以及将给消费者带来的好处。FEB运用到英文求职信中,即求职者的优点、证明及其将给用人单位带来的利益。在FEB写作中,学生通常遇到以下几个难题:其一,只有优点,没有证明。FEB公式强调的是三者的整体运用,缺一不可,否则求职材料会缺乏说服力,因此,教师在学生写作前应引导他们收集资料。其二,很难找到佐证。主要原因是学生没有意识到自己的优点。教师应提醒学生,优点不仅表现为获得了哪些荣誉、发表了多少文章、参与了多少兼职,还体现在学习与生活的小细节中,如学生和社团成员一起完成了某项任务、按期偿还了助学贷款等。根据以上方法,如果某公司(ABC)招聘的外贸业务员岗位要求应聘者有一定的工作经历、强烈的责任心和良好的组织协调能力,就可以从中获取三个关键词:Employment background,strong sense of responsibility and orga-nization skills,并分别运用FEB法则,详见例4。

4.促成行动(Action):提供联系方式,结束自我推销
第四步――写作内容的主要目的是促使用人单位采取行动,一般采用两种策略。一是要求对方尽早给予答复,二是告诉对方自己将在一定时间内与负责人取得进一步的联系,通常求职者应该提供有效的联系方式,并告知对方自己何时可以来面试或者上班。学生在这部分内容的写作中应简明扼要,如例5、例6,同时牢记如下原则:态度要主动,表达要清晰,语气要中肯,措词要礼貌。

英文求职信【第二篇】
写求职信的要点
公司的老板大多认为,注重小节的人对重大的事务也会谨慎行事。一个人做人做事是否谨慎可以从一封求职信中看出端倪来。你别看轻了短短的一封信,一封求职信可以显露出一个人的嗜好、鉴别力、教育程度以及人格特性。下列几个要点便是泄露一个人‘机密‘的地方。因此,写信人非格外留意不可。
1. 纸张的选用:最好使用品质优良,白色的信纸。信封要配合信纸的质料和颜色。
2. 书写:求职者常需用亲手写信,字体要写得清洁可辩,龙飞凤舞的字迹无疑是自寻绝路。如果可能的话,使用打字机把信打出来。这样看起来比较具有商业气息。
3. 格式:信文要适当地排列在信纸中,格式要一致,如采用齐头式(或斜线式)便需全部一致,不可中途改变
4. 语法、标点和拼写:正确无误的语法、标点和拼写使读信人感到舒畅,错误的语法或拼写则十分明显,一望即知,予人坏印象。尤其要注意的是,绝不可把收信人的姓名或公司名号拼错了。
5. 信封:信封上面的地址要完整,称谓要合时宜,信纸的折叠要适当,大小适合信封。
6. 附件:求职信函通常不须附加推荐信,除非招聘广告有此要求。遇到这种情形,只须附上复印件即可。求职函内附加邮票或回址信封,强迫对方答覆的作法不足效法,除非对方有此要求。
信函的内容
求职信函内容应包括那些?通常根据所欲谋求的工作性质而定。基本上,可以包括下列几项:
1. 写这封信的目的或动机:通常求职信都是针对报纸上招聘广告而写的。若此,信中便须提到何月何日的报纸,有时‘工作机会‘是从朋友或介绍所(如青辅会就业辅导中心)听来的,有时是写信人不知某机构、公司有工作机会,毛遂自荐而写的信,不论是哪一种,求职信上一定要说明写信的缘起和目的。
2. 个人资料:写信人应述明自己的年龄或出生年月,教育背景,尤其是和应征的职位有关的训练或教育科目、工作经验或特殊的技能;如无实际经验,略述在学类似经验亦可。
3. 备询人员或推荐人:正常的顺序是先获得这些人同意后再把他们的姓名、地址列入信中,推荐人二至三名即可。
4. 结尾:求职信的结尾在希望并请求未来的雇主允以面谈的机会,因此,信中要表明可以面谈的时间。使用的句子要有特性、避免软弱、老生常谈的滥调。
机智和良好的判断
写求职信要有机智和良好的判断,下列几点可供参考。
1. 陈述事实,避免表示意见:与训练和经验有关的事实可以陈述出来,但应避免表示意见说这些训练和经验对所应征的工作将有怎样的关系或好处。
2. 不要批评他人:如果你要离开现职,可以说出原因但不要用批评的方式,雇主想要了解你,而非你的工作机会。
3. 不要过份渲染自我:你当然认为有能力,够资格才要申请某一职位,但不要过份夸大自己的能力或表现过份信心,尤其不要说出与事实不符的能力或特性来。
4. 留意底薪:有的雇主要你提到希望的待遇。你要作良好的判断,写出你觉得可行的最低薪。开始就业的人应知道,与其寻得一份高薪的工作倒不如找待遇尚可而有升迁机会的工作。
求职信英文
应征函的第一段说明写信的缘起目的,有些专家认为不宜用分词子句,如下列各句作为第一句。因为这类句子被人用得大多,显得陈腐,失去突出的特性。
Replying to your advertisement…… Answering your advertisement…… Believing that there is an opportunity…… Thinking that there is a vacancy in your company…… Having read your ad……
再比较下列三句。(a)句较差,经过修改后(b)句显得较恰当。
1.(a)Replying to your recent advertisement in the Boston Evening Globe, I wish to apply for the position of sales manager……
(b)In applying for the position of sales manager I offer my qualifications, which I believe will meet your exacting requirements.
2.(a)I believe after reading your advertisement in this morning‘s Journal that you have just the opportunity I am looking for.
(b)your advertisement in this morning‘s Journal for an adjustment manager prompts me to offer you my qualifications for this position
3.(a) Having read your advertisement in the New York Times for an accountant, I thought you might be interested in my application.
(b)In your advertisement for an accountant, you indicated that you require the services of a competent person, with thorough training in the field of cost accounting. Please consider me an applicant for the position. Here are my reasons for believing I am qualified for this work.
求职的人不得不提到希望待遇时,可用类似的句子:
1.I hesitate to state a definite salary, but, as long as you have requested me to , I should consider 6,500 a month satisfactory. 我对待遇总是迟迟无法定个确切数目,但既然您要我说明,我认为月薪六千五百元就满意了。

应征函的语气
应征函要发挥最大的效果,语气必须肯定、自信、有创意而不过份夸张,如能事先洞察雇主的喜好,或其他人格特性,根据物以类聚的原理,应征函若能配合雇主的特性,求职的人一定可以比其他人占上风,获得面谈的机会。 比较下列各句语气上有何不同:
